The Grover family were a major presence in East Clarendon for several generations.  Joseph Hadley Grover (1824 - 1911) came to Clarendon from Plymouth, VT in 1841 at age 17.  In 1848 he married Keziah Round (Fish) Ingerson (1815 - 1899), widow of Darius Ingerson (1808 - 1844) with 3 surviving children from that 1st marriage to Darius.  Joseph & Keziah had a daughter Louisa (1852 - 1861) and a son Abbott Joseph Grover (1855 - 1904).

Abbott married Hattie Melissa Manley (1856 - 1914) in 1875 and with her had 5 children.  The home of one of their sons, Alfred Manley Grover (1881 - 1964) can be seen in the Alfred Grover House entry in the Homes collection.  The home for the son that all of the photos in this entry are associated with, George Abbott Grover (1884 - 1964) can be seen in the Donnelly House entry in the Homes collection.

George was married to Deborah Susan Eddy (1883 - 1960) in 1904 by the Rev. Lee Leonard Chase (1860 - 1930).  See the Rev. L.L. Chase, Ordained @ East Clarendon entry in the Churches collection for more on him.  For the period 1909 - 1914, Deborah was the postmaster for the East Clarendon Post Office, running it out of their home.  See the East Clarendon Post Office Closes 1935 entry in the Events collection for more on that post office.

George & Deborah had 3 children:  Irene Deborah Grover (1911 - 1994) who married Arthur Seth Hill Jr. (1909 - 1986), Clayton George Grover (1920 - 2001) who married Mildred N. Pockette (1921 - 2003), and Clifford Donald Grover (1925 - 1944) who married Doris Louise Gee (1926 - 2006).  Clifford died in France without ever having seen his son that was born while Clifford was fighting in Europe.

See the Clifford D. Grover (1925 - 1944), WWII Hero entry in the Soldiers & Wars collection for more on Clifford and the Grover Lumber Mill entry in the Buildings & Enterprises collection for more on the family business.  See also the Life In A Shoebox entry in the Letters collection for the story of Irene Grover's memorabilia having been found at the airport.
