The cover photo is of the June 2, 1957 dedication of the suspension bridge over the gorge built as part of the Long Trail. That photo is courtesy of the Merusi collection at the Rutland Herald. In 1973 it was destroyed in a flood and on July 4, 1973 seventeen year old Bob Brugmann of Flemington, NJ drowned trying to cross the still swollen river. See the Clarendon Gorge Drowning 1973 entry in the Events collection for more information on that.
In 1974 the current bridge was built by the Green Mountain Club through donations and volunteer help, including from young Mr. Brugmann's family & friends. A plaque was placed in memory of Bob Brugmann (see the Clarendon Gorge Drowning 1973 entry in the Events collection for a photo of the plaque).
Below is a May 25, 1974 Rutland Herald article announcing the project and another article from July 1, 1974. Below that is the Aug. 29, 1974 article covering the dedication of the new bridge.
Note that the articles below say the former bridge was built in 1958. That is incorrect. See the May 30, 1957 Rutland Herald article at the very bottom below about its 1957 dedication.
