Corporal Robert Emery Nichols, (3/25/1919 - 7/29/1942) of Clarendon was the gunner in the 8th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Group, Light, US Army Air Force during WWII, enlisting 12-6-1940 prior to the war.  He was the son of Ernest Ray Nichols (1891 - 1968) and Beulah Mary Baird (1888 - 1955) and brother of Maurine Nichols Clary (1922 - 2013).  His body was not recovered.  There is a memorial marker in the East Clarendon Cemetery and he is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manilla American Cemetery and Memorial, Manilla, Phillipines.

Below is the brief announcement in the newspaper that went with the cover photo when he went missing, and below that a photo of the type of plane, A24 Dauntless, that he was a gunner on when he was shot down over the Pacific Ocean north of Buna, Phillipines.
