This Clarendon Flats Middle Road photo from 1931 was a postcard from Bertha (Miller) Perkins (1870 - 1947) to her daughter Helen (Perkins) Fiske (1896 - 1975) in Manchester, VT.  This home is said to have been built ca. 1790, though it likely was later than that.  It was owned by Caleb Hall (1779 - 1857) who sold it to his daughter Delilah (1810 - 1870) and her husband Rev. Philetus Clark (1794 - 1875).  The home was recorded as being owned by P. Clark at the time of the 1869 map compilation, though it appears it was their son Caleb Hall Clark (1832 - 1902) and family living there.  Caleb lived there for the remainder of his life.

It is not known when the Perkins bought this property but they were living in it by 1920.  At the time of the 1930 census Bertha Perkins was Postmaster for the post office in Clarendon Flats.  That post office closed in 1934.  Her husband James (1871 - 1944) was a patrolman.

From our Facebook site we have a recollection about this house being used as the post office.  From Robert Congdon:

....my grandfather talked about the mail bag being on the hook by the station (now where town garage sand pile is) and the mail having to be taken up to the house which was the post office.

On the far right of the photo the structure with two windows showing is the Town Hall.

A special thanks to Dawn Hance for some of the background history of this home.  The photo at the bottom is from 2007 town records.
