When dog licenses were first required in Clarendon is not known but the cover photo and first one below were taken out by Noel Potter in 1890 and 1895 and below that one taken out by Harry Holden in 1901. They show us that it has been happening for longer than many might have thought. Note that the 1890 license is for a 9 year old shepherd named James A. Garfield, clearly named after President James A. Garfield who was assassinated in 1881. Noel had a penchant for shepherds being in 1895 he again had a shepherd, this one being a 4 year old named Duke. Harry too had a shepherd, his being named Rover.
