The January 24, 2016 Times Argus featured a story about a shoebox of memorabilia dating from 1911 - 1945 found in a J.C.Penney shoe box under a stairwell at the Rutland Regional Airport. The material in the box had come from Irene Grover Hill (1911-1994) and her father George Abbott Grover (1884-1964). Irene's mother was Deborah Eddy (1883-1960) and her husband was Arthur Seth Hill (1909-1986).
How the shoebox came to be under that stairwell is not known nor why it didn't make its way to Irene and Arthur's son Donald Arthur Hill (1949-2001). It could be that it was found in Irene & Arthur's Airport Rd home (1947 photo below) when the home was being torn down and the land absorbed as part of the airport.
Irene's brother was Clifford Grover who died in France during WWII. He can be found in the People collection. Info and photos on Irene's father George Grover's lumber mill can be found in the Buildings collection. A couple of the photographs showing the beginning of construction of the airport in the Events collection were taken from Irene's yard.
What became of the shoebox materials is not known at this time.
