The 3/12/1998 Rutland Daily Herald newspaper article below (written by Dawn Hance) tells the history of Dr.Silas Hodges (1741 - 1801) who came to Clarendon in 1783, the Middle Road home his widow Mary Gould Hodges (1760 - 1843) built shortly after his death, and the inn she established in that home in 1808.  Dr. Hodges served in the Revolutionary War as a surgeon and for a time personally served George Washington.
