The modern day Cobb Lane in Clarendon Flats is the remaining piece of what had been a much longer road.  The cover photo shows the route the road had taken long ago.  Before 1831 Cobb Road was the main route from Clarendon Flats to the old Crown Point Road (Airport Rd, old 103). It ran along the top of the ridge above today's Gorge Rd.

In a letter by Lois Wilder April 4, 1956 she explained why the road was abandoned and replaced by the present Gorge Rd. "This road originally went up the hill past the house (now Thompson's) which faces south, across what is now airport property to Route 103. However this road drifted so badly in winter, that on April 22, 1831 plans were made to change the road to follow the river. This is where the road is today but the old road bed over the hill is still discernible".

The photos below show the roadway today looking east, a cistern that once held water pumped up the hill (though for what purpose is not known), a view of an old well house where the water would have been pumped from, and views of the well itself.

See the Historical Society - Crown Point Road Association Joint Event 2018 entry in the Newsletters & Presentations collection for an outing to explore this roadway.
