This 1818 silk embroidery was made by either Lydia Hills (1798 - 1821) or her sister Lucy Hills (1803 - 1856), daughter of John  and Mehitable (Walker) Hills of Chippenhook.  At the link above you will find a transcript of the eulogies she stitched and some background information on Lydia/Lucy and the Hills family.  This and the companion Elmira Clarinda Walker embroidery also found in this collection are extremely rare examples of embroidery on silk from this era with only one other known example in this style.  That 3rd example is also thought to have come from Chippenhook in the same timeframe as these two.  The Lydia/Lucy Hills embroidery is held in a private collection and is shown here with permission of the owner.
