Nathan Jones Smith (1804 - 1876) was a prominent farmer, businessman, and legislator.  He lived his life in Clarendon and was the son of Arimethea Smith (1767 - 1836) and Eunice (Denison) Smith (1764 - 1851).  Nathan was the husband of Alzina (Button) Smith (1814 - 1898).  Alzina's photo can be seen below, followed by the May 12, 1876 Rutland Daily Globe article about Nathan's life and death.  One of Nathan's & Alzina's grandsons was Robert Seneca Smith (1880 - 1939).  See the Robert Seneca Smith entry in this collection for more on him.  Alzina was the great granddaughter of Charles Button (1739 - 1790) and Anna (Wilcox) Button (1740 - 1777) who came to Clarendon in the autumn of 1767 and were the first known settlers in Clarendon.  One of Nathan's brothers was Enoch Smith (see the Enoch Smith Cellar Hole entry in the Cellar Hole collection)
