On April 25, 1876, the body of 9 year old Bertie McKnight of East Wallingford was found on a former bank of the Mill River near where it intersected with Otter Creek.  This would be a bit south of the current channel the Mill River follows.  Young Bertie was found very close to where the body of 18 year old Bob Brugman would be found nearly 100 years later (see Clarendon Gorge Drowning 1973 in this collection).

Bertie was the son of Orvis McKnight Sr. (1822 - 1891) and Harriet (Hart) McKnight (1830 - 1912) and brother to Perley and Orvis Jr.

The April 26, 1876 Rutland Daily Globe article below describes the discovery.  Below that is an April 28, 1876 article describing the circumstances of Bertie's drowning.

The cover photo is an undated postcard of the Mill River Gorge.
