When the rail line came through East Clarendon in 1847 it cut through a rise where it crossed paths with the farm access road to the Smith farm.  This was just north of where the rail line crosses East Clarendon Rd.  As a result the railroad would have had to build a bridge over the rail line to restore access for the Smiths from their farm to East Clarendon Rd.  The farm and bridge are long gone.  The cellar hole for the former Smith homestead can be seen in the Smith Cellar Hole entry in the Cellar Holes collection.

The top photo is from ca. 1960 courtesy of the Poulin collection at Middlebury College.  The bottom photo is taken from the top of the abutment looking towards East Clarendon Rd.  These photos are courtesy of Phil Mandolare in 2020.
