This ca. 1850 Cold River Rd house was the home of Hiram Burgess Spafford (1825 - 1889) and his wife Caroline (Saunders) Spafford (1829 - 1916).  Hiram was a cabinetmaker.  He and Caroline had 5 children.

On the 1854 map H. Spafford was living on the east side of the road.  Nothing is shown on the west side of the road where this house it located.  This property had belonged to Hiram's grandfather Eliphalet Life Spafford (1799 - 1874) who bought it in 1815 and sold it in 1856.  It passed through two additional owners before Hiram bought it in 1866.  More research is needed to determine which piece of this puzzle is wrong.  Was Hiram living on the east side of the road in 1854 and moved the house to the west side after he bought that property?  Or was the house built after 1854 by Hiram's grandfather or one of the subsequent owners and the house Hiram was living in at the time of the 1854 map compilation a different house?
