In 1961 Dave Potter won 3rd place in the Vermont Historical Society's Edmunds Essay Contest with his essay "A History of the Mineral Springs Industry of Clarendon Springs" which can be seen below.

The Edmunds Essay contest for Vermont high school students began in 1928 and was named after George F. Edmunds (1828 - 1919).

Edmunds had been a US Senator representing Vermont 1866 - 1891 and had been President pro tempore of the US Senate 1883 - 1885 and then Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference 1865 - 1891.  Prior to becoming US Senator he had been in the Vermont House of Representatives 1854 - 1860, serving as Speaker 1857 - 1860 and been in the Vermont Senate 1861 - 1863, serving as President pro tempore 1861 - 1862.

Dave's interest in history continued into adulthood; Dave being one of the primary creators of the 1976 Clarendon  history book and with his continuing to be one of Clarendon's best historians to the present.  He has been a Representative in the Vermont House of Representatives since 2005.
